Empowering everyone to join the conversation around mental health

because no one should walk the trail alone.

The Empowered Trail Foundation, established in 2024, is dedicated to helping communities that support mental health healing through connection, open dialogue, and harnessing the transformative power of the great outdoors.

Chris and Ryan, the duo behind the Empowered Trail Foundation, met in the winter of 2020/2021 during the COVID lockdown through their shared love for the video game Call of Duty: Warzone. Despite living hundreds of miles apart—Chris in Michigan and Ryan in Massachusetts—they forged a deep connection, rooted in shared experiences, a passion for mental health advocacy, and a mutual commitment to supporting one another through life’s challenges.

Their bond was strengthened by ongoing vulnerability and supporting the other through personal losses, including the passing of family members by suicide and battles with anxiety and depression. Through countless hours of late-night gaming and open conversations, their friendship became a cornerstone of resilience, honesty and growth.

The idea for the Empowered Trail Foundation was born from a shared milestone: Chris and Ryan both turn 40 in 2025. As they reflected on their journeys and the importance of mental health, they were inspired to use this significant birthday as a way to make an impact. Determined to raise awareness and funds for mental health and suicide prevention, they decided to commemorate this milestone by taking on the TGO Challenge—a 15-day self-supported trek across Scotland. Ryan brings extensive backpacking experience, including climbing New Hampshire's White Mountains, while Chris lends expertise in fundraising and storytelling. Together, they aim to support others in their mental health journeys
